Soft nitriding treatment (Tuftride)

Processing is possible for various types of steel! It is a treatment that results in extremely little deformation compared to carburizing and conventional quenching.

Our company offers "soft nitriding treatment (Tufftriding)." This process is conducted at a lower temperature (generally between 550 and 580°C) than the transformation point temperature (the austenite transformation temperature during quenching), resulting in extremely minimal deformation compared to carburizing or conventional quenching. Unlike the phenomenon of hardening through quenching, this treatment hardens by diffusing nitrogen into the surface and forming a layer of iron nitride compounds on the surface. (This differs from the form of hardening that utilizes the transformation of steel as in quenching.) Soft nitriding aims to improve fatigue strength, wear resistance, and corrosion resistance. The finish appears gray to light gray (the color of the nitrided layer). Generally, at a treatment temperature of around 570°C, a mixed gas primarily composed of ammonia gas is added to form a compound layer of carbides and nitrides on the surface of the processed material, generating a diffusion layer beneath it. This nitrided layer significantly improves the mechanical properties of steel components, such as wear resistance, corrosion resistance, and fatigue resistance. Gas Soft Nitriding Treatment (SN Process)

For improving the wear resistance, fatigue strength, and sliding performance of steel materials, gas soft nitriding treatment is recommended.

This is an introduction to the gas soft nitriding treatment (SN process) conducted by our company. When gas soft nitriding is performed, a compound layer (ε layer) of about 5μm to 20μm is formed on the metal surface. This compound layer consists of a layer made of nitrides and carbides, and the gas soft nitriding treatment is conducted in an atmosphere that contains not only nitrogen atoms but also carbon atoms. Furthermore, inside this compound layer, a layer of nitrides called the diffusion layer is formed, and these compound and diffusion layers enhance the wear resistance, fatigue strength, and sliding performance of steel material components. Gas soft nitriding treatment is one of the soft nitriding methods developed to solve the quality issues associated with traditional salt bath nitriding and to reduce environmental impact while achieving equivalent or superior quality characteristics. Generally, at a treatment temperature of around 570°C, a mixed gas primarily composed of ammonia gas is added to form a compound layer of carbides and nitrides on the surface of the processed material, creating a diffusion layer beneath it. This nitrided layer significantly improves the mechanical properties of steel components, such as wear resistance, corrosion resistance, and fatigue resistance. Gas soft nitriding treatment is an environmentally friendly method that allows for effective quality characteristics to be obtained in a short time, making it a processing method that takes environmental aspects into consideration. Gas soft nitriding treatment is a heat treatment that forms carbonitrides on the surface by heating and holding in a mixed atmosphere, allowing nitrogen and carbon to diffuse into the surface. It features excellent wear resistance, less distortion compared to quenching, and surface hardness equivalent to that achieved during quenching, with a quicker finishing time. By hardening relatively inexpensive materials, it is also possible to achieve the same hardness as more expensive materials. Additionally, while the basic finishing characteristics such as hardness remain unchanged between "salt bath soft nitriding" and "gas soft nitriding," gas soft nitriding results in a cleaner appearance after treatment, leading to fewer processing steps and faster completion.
